June 25th Speaking Engagement in Long Island
I will be speaking on "Hispanics and the Future of the Catholic Church in the U.S." at the Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies (Garden City, Long Island, N.Y.) on Monday, June 25th, at 1:30 p.m., for those who live in the New York City area. I would appreciate the prayers of all readers, on or before that date, for a fruitful event. Further details are at this link (yes, the bio is quite generous--cum grano salis!). The talk should last about one hour with a question period after one hour. I will rely extensively on the new Pew Research Center report on Hispanics and religion at this link. The report is worth printing out and reading carefully, either before or after the talk.

Mexican Catholics are as poorly catechized as American Catholics, so are vulnerable to emotional lures.
In my opinion, the attrition from Catholicism by Mexicans, or any group, could be remedied by vigorous homilies and teaching about the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Further, knowledgeable reception of the Eucharist would keep our Catholics home.
I agree veritas, and am going to Oswald's lecture on Long Island to get ideas from a strategy to keep our Hispanics in the Church.
See you there, Oswald!
